District Councils

District Councils were established with the passage of the Empowering Communities for Public Safety Ordinance in 2021. It is made up of three people elected from each district through regular municipal elections, which occur every four years, with the first election taking place in February 2023.

District Council members act as intermediaries and advocates to facilitate a process by which community members have a stronger voice in public safety outcomes at a local level.  Collaboration is key. The council members actively engage in the development and implementation of community policing initiatives, emphasizing proactive strategies that involve the police working closely with residents to identify and address local public-safety concerns. The District Council members play a crucial role in facilitating this collaboration by ensuring that police-related strategies to improve safety are responsive to the unique needs and aspirations of each district. This localized approach allows for tailored solutions that address the specific challenges and dynamics of different communities within the city.

The councils hold monthly public meetings, offering a platform for open dialogue, enabling community members to express their concerns, share feedback and propose initiatives rooted in their specific community concerns and priorities. Through these meetings, residents have the opportunity to work directly with law enforcement officers, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility for the safety and well-being of their neighborhoods.
